Appendicolith

Appendicolith

Appendicolith. A PFA is no longer the first-line imaging study performed for patients with suspected appendicitis (ultrasound and/or CT are usually requested), however it is occasionally performed, especially in patients with atypical symptoms. The finding of a calcified ‘appendicolith’ (arrow) in the right iliac fossa in someone with suspected appendicitis is reported to have a specificity of around 80% for appendicitis. Note: the additional calcifications present in the pelvis in this case are phleboliths (‘vein stones’), which are very common and of no clinical significance.
