Iliac artery stenting
Iliac artery stenting. This 48 year old smoker was complaining of severe left lower limb claudication symptoms. A CT angiogram was performed, image (a), and shows atherosclerotic occlusion of the left common iliac artery (indicated by the yellow arrow – compare to the normally-enhancing right common iliac artery, white arrow). In IR, a catheter (image (b), white arrow) was inserted through the left femoral artery, a guidewire was manipulated past the occluded segment, and the catheter advanced into the aorta so that an angiogram could be performed. This clearly demonstrates the abnormal segment of the iliac artery (yellow arrow). Balloon angioplasty was performed at this site, image (c), and a metal stent inserted to help prevent recurrence of the stenosis. Post-procedure angiogram, (d), shows a widely patent artery. The patient’s symptoms resolved.
