Spina bifida

In this example of spina bifida, with obvious absence of fusion of the lumbar posterior elements, note the ventriculoperitoneal shunt looping through the abdomen – these are commonly inserted in spina bifida patients, to relieve the hydrocephalus that is often associated with the condition.
