Varices

Varices. The rounded density projected behind the heart in this chest x-ray (arrow) was caused by huge varices around the distal oesophagus, demonstrated on the middle CT image (red arrows). The image on the right shows some ascites around the liver (orange arrow). The spleen is also mildly enlarged in this patient with chronic liver disease.
